This essential project has been developed to provide a diversionary activity for young people and provides long term contact with positive adults and serves as a gateway to our other activities. We also use the club to discuss health issues and target obesity within the community and to promote self-discipline, teamwork and leadership skills. Additionally, older boys are encouraged to act as unofficial mentors for younger children back in the community. This stewardship is a big part of our community cohesion work. Our football club is linked to our main annual events which are the Family Fun Day, and the Police and MyGeneration Community Cup Event. Our football club is growing and we have now started our second squad and have a senior team of young men aged 19-25 as well as a junior team of boys aged 16-18, who train regularly and play in a local league every weekend. As with most of our activities, the football club is run by volunteers from our community and we also receive outside help from a local institution. Much of the anti-social behaviour and crime that young boys are involved in is based on the misunderstanding of what it is to be a successful man. The club offers an opportunity for the two age groups to mix and the young men to give the benefit of their experience, having grown up with the same issues. This is important as the youngsters' respect the authenticity of the men speaking to them, as this builds a trust and respect of the advice given and helps to change their understanding of what it is to be a successful man. This stewardship offers the men and opportunity to put something back in to their community and allows them to show how they have learned from their mistakes. In the run up to the Olympics, the next step is to develop other sporting activities and try to involve as many of our young people as possible. |
