This project is aimed towards at boys aged 11-18 who are at particular risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour and criminal activity. The course is designed to encourage them to modify their own behaviour. It tries to show them the benefits of education and social development and encourages them to challenge and change their own behaviour. Throughout the duration of the project, the boys will discuss and debate various subjects including gangs, bullying, gun and knife crime, teenage sexual activity and relationships, drugs and the importance of education and employment. The project consists of a series of workshops running every Thursday evening from 6-9pm. The sessions include discussions on who these male youths are and how they see themselves within their community and society. There are weeks focusing on topics such as healthy eating, crime, guns, gangs and loyalty. Towards the final weeks of working with one particular group the project will concentrate on what they want to achieve in life, how to get work including help with CVs, work ethic and finally, a reflection on how they see themselves based on what they have learned through the workshop. There will be times when the boys are taken off site on a trip including visiting a prison, a top museum, rock climbing, a music workshop and a book shop. The boys initially went on a go-karting trip (see report below). These young males are academic low achievers and thus do not conform to a traditional learning style. Our approach therefore is interactive in so much as each major learning outcome we aim to achieve will be delivered through activity. This approach is designed for the high level of engagement needed for this specific subset of youth. We aim to improve quality of life by having the objective of effecting sustained behavioural change in a group of male youths who show consistent anti-social behaviour. This is a bridge scheme into existing MyGeneration projects such as our Job Club, BSES Overseas Project, The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and in to training programmes.
